The latest findings from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which conducts a survey of youth risk behaviour every two years, show that 57 per cent of teenage girls have experienced persistent sadness or despair, up from 36 per cent in 2011; 30 per cent said they had seriously considered suicide, up from 19 per cent in 2011.

Boys' performance was basically stable, social media had less impact on boys, had less high rates of depression and anxiety, and had a smaller increase since 2011.

Professor Haidt provided a study of 19000 British teenagers who found that watching Netflix videos and using social media such as Facebook and Twitter had a negative impact on teenage girls.

Overall, from the results of the study, the impact of social media on teenagers is not correlation, but a clear causal relationship. Although there are other factors contributing to the mental health of adolescent girls, Collaborative Review documents show the following conclusions: social media is the main cause of the prevalence of mental illness in adolescent girls.
