Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com February 24 news, Japan's "Nippon Industry News" reported today that TSMC plans to build a second chip manufacturing plant in Kiyang, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, with an investment expected to exceed 1 trillion yen (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 51.2 billion yuan).
TSMC's first plant in Kumamoto is now under construction and aims to start production in 2024. The plant is operated by Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), a foundry service subsidiary of Kumamoto Prefecture, and is invested by Sony Semiconductor Solutions, Toyota Motor Group and Denso.
It is said that the new plant, which is the same or larger as the first plant, may introduce advanced 5-10nm technology (the Kumamoto plant, scheduled to start production at the end of 2024, will be responsible for the production of 22/28nm and 12/16nm process chips with a monthly capacity of 55,000 chips) and is expected to start operating after 2025. The company emphasizes the ability of the two factories to share human resources and equipment and plans to decide on the details by 2023.
TSMC appears to be negotiating on issues such as government subsidies and customer investment, with details to be finalised by the end of the year, Tuyuan Pexels reported. The Japanese government has made ensuring a stable supply of semiconductors an important economic security issue.
Last year, TSMC, together with Sony Group, invested about $7 billion (CTOnews.com Note: current about 48.3 billion yuan) to build a semiconductor factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, while Japan decided to provide 476 billion yen (CTOnews.com Note: current about 24.371 billion yuan) subsidy to the factory.
In addition, Wei Zhijia, CEO of TSMC, said at a financial results meeting in January that the company was considering building a second factory in Japan. But Sony said it was not discussing related issues with TSMC.
