At present, the core suppliers of Apple's OLED driver chips are LX Semicon and Samsung System LSI. Among them, Samsung System LSI driver chip is mainly manufactured by Samsung Electronics and United Power, while LX Semicon driver chip is mainly manufactured by TSMC, United Power and Lattice Core. After the upgrade of Apple's OLED driver chip process, these driver chip designers and wafer manufacturers are likely to benefit from it. At the same time, it has recently been reported that Lianyong may enter Apple's OLED driver chip supply chain in 2024.
There may be two reasons for the upgrade of Apple's OLED driver chip. First, the 28nm HV process can further reduce the power consumption of OLED driver chips and improve the battery life of iPhone 15 series models. Second, the wafer foundry between LX Semicon and Samsung System LSI is moving the OLED driver chip process from 40nm HV to 28nm HV, and shifting the 40nm process to other types of chips such as eFlash flash memory. They are not willing to accept 40nm OLED DDI orders.
Although Taiwan wafer foundry in China has reduced the foundry capacity of 40nm HV OLED driver chips, with the continuous growth of flexible OLED shipments, the demand for 40nm OLED driver wafer foundry capacity has increased, which may lead to a shortage of 40nm HV OLED driver wafer foundry capacity. At the same time, the migration of Apple OLED driver chips to 28nm HV may also cause a shortage of 28nm production capacity, which leads chip designers to compete for available 40nm and 28nm wafer foundry capacity.
