CTOnews.com, February 23 (Xinhua)-- Samsung Electronics announced today that it has mastered standardized 5G non-terrestrial network (Non-terrestrial networks,NTN) technology for direct communication between smartphones and satellites, especially in remote areas.

Samsung said it planned to integrate the technology into its Exynos modem solution to accelerate the commercialization of 5G satellite communications and "pave the way for a 6G-driven era of the Internet of everything (IoE)".

Min Goo Kim, executive vice president of Samsung's communications processor development team, said the milestone was based on Samsung's previous wireless communications technology, including the launch of 4G LTE modems in 2009 and 5G modems in 2018. Samsung plans to take the lead in promoting the terrestrial-non-terrestrial network hybrid communication ecosystem globally in preparation for the arrival of 6G.

According to reports, NTN (non-terrestrial network) is a communication technology that applies satellites and other non-terrestrial carriers. Whether in mountainous areas, deserts or at sea, NTN can cover signals to areas that were previously inaccessible by terrestrial networks. By meeting the latest 5G NTN standard defined in the third Generation partner Program (3GPP) specification (version 17), Samsung's NTN technology will help telecom operators, mobile device manufacturers and chip companies provide services that are interoperable and scalable.

Samsung pointed out that in order to be able to conduct highly reliable NTN communications with low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, it has developed and simulated satellite technology based on the 5G NTN standard on the Exynos Modem 5300 reference platform to accurately predict satellite position and minimize frequency offset caused by Doppler shift. Based on this technology, Samsung's future Exynos modems will support two-way text messages as well as high-definition image and video sharing.

CTOnews.com learned from Samsung officials that Samsung plans to use standardized NB-IoT technology for the next generation of modem platforms. Due to the integration of satellite connections, Samsung's NB-IoT non-terrestrial network technology will enable smartphones to eliminate the need for separate high-power wireless antenna chips, providing design flexibility for mobile device manufacturers.
