Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, February 23 (Xinhua)-- earlier this month, Microsoft launched a new Bing search, a new chat robot that combines the technology of Microsoft and OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Google also announced plans to launch Bard, an artificial intelligence chat robot designed to help users find information through natural language models.

However, officials rarely talk about the operating costs of these chatbots, and Reuters recently interviewed John Hennessy, chairman of Alphabet, who said that using chatbots with large language models could cost 10 times as much as a regular search.

CTOnews.com noted that as early as December 2022, just after the launch of ChatGPT, Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, said on Twitter that "computing costs are eye-popping". That's part of the reason it launched ChatGPT Plus in early February, where users can get more features and faster responses for $20 a month.

When conducting a search at Google in 2022, Google's cost was estimated at 1/5 cents, according to a Morgan Stanley report. However, if chat robot artificial intelligence like Bard is put into use, Google's search costs could increase by $6 billion in 2024. This is assuming that the chatbot handles half of Google's searches, with 50 words for each search answer.

The reason for the higher cost, of course, is that more computing power is needed to generate all these answers from the chatbot AI, which means it is more expensive to keep these servers working.

So, how can we reduce the cost? Or to make these chatbots more efficient, thereby reducing operating costs, another solution is that Google and Microsoft can insert advertising links into the answers of chatbots to generate revenue and compensate for the operating costs of these servers. Microsoft is already testing this program. Another solution is to provide subscription services, which are already provided by ChatGPT, but this option may be a last resort for Google and Microsoft.
