CTOnews.com February 22, the openSUSE project announced today that the openSUSE Leap 15.5 system Beta has started public testing.

Based on SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP5 (Service Pack 5), openSUSE Leap version 15.5 appears to have the same Linux 5.14 kernel as the previous version, but the latest KDE Plasma 5.27 LTS desktop environment will be provided by default.

OpenSUSE Leap 15.5 will not have the latest GNU / Linux technology and open source software like openSUSE Tumbleweed, but it will still provide some newer software versions, such as the Mesa 22.3 desktop stack.

OpenSUSE Leap 15.5 will also enable OpenH264 software libraries by default for all newly installed systems and provide a new single button migration feature, which is expected to simplify the migration process from previous versions of openSUSE Leap.

"users who want to migrate from previous versions or [openSUSE Leap] 15.5 Alpha can install openSUSE-repos-Leap, which comes with repo definition and leverages zypp services for repo management, although this feature is not enabled by default.

The KDE Plasma 5.27 LTS desktop environment, Python 3.10 and other newer components and related modules will be available to users later in the Beta phase of openSUSE Leap 15.5 and are expected to arrive on June 7, 2023. "

The openSUSE project also confirms that openSUSE Leap 15.5 will be the last version of the Leap 15 series, which was first released in May 2018 and is based on the SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 operating system family.
