On February 21, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, TIM, Telef ó nica and Vodafone said they had begun a small trial of Open RAN and would announce a new pilot this year and a larger deployment in 2025.

"Web innovation is increasingly focused on agility, security and sustainability," said Elisabetta Romano, chief innovation and partnership officer at TIM. "TIM firmly believes that the standardization process should fully address all the challenges posed by the new technology Open RAN."

But it is clear from the white papers of the five operators that they are behind the timetable announced when they signed the agreement in 2021, when they planned to deploy Open RAN on a large scale in 2022, and the current 2025 target is three years behind schedule.

"as Open RAN technology enters a new stage of development, maturity, security and energy efficiency are becoming more and more important, and in 2022, the company encourages public discussion around these topics," the five companies said in a statement. The statement also pointed out that with tens of thousands of deployment sites worldwide, Open RAN is closing the gap with traditional mobile radio networks in terms of functional equivalence and performance.

Abdu Mudesir, chief technology officer of Deutsche Telekom, said: "Open RAN has matured in the past few months and our initial commercial deployment will begin soon."

"in the medium to long term, Open RAN will develop the supplier ecosystem and revolutionize the current 5G industry," said Enrique Blanco, global chief technology and innovation officer at Telef ó nica. "We believe this is good for our customers and society, so we are working to achieve this goal."

Alberto Ripepi, chief network officer of Vodafone, said: "it is understandable that any major change to the decades-old supplier ecosystem will be called into question."

But Micha ë l Trabbia, Orange's chief technology and innovation officer, said: "recent significant developments in the Open RAN industry have convinced us that from 2023, open and cloud-native RAN are ready for their first commercial deployment in the traditional network market. We expect open RAN to surpass even traditional RAN, allowing us to benefit from fully automated and intelligent networks."
