CTOnews.com, February 21, according to the official news of China Mobile, recently, China Mobile Research Institute, together with ZTE, Huawei and other industrial partners, completed the end-to-end infield test verification of RedCap for 5G core network, which laid a good foundation for accelerating the commercial deployment of RedCap technology.

3GPP R17 standard co-definition RedCap (CTOnews.com Note: its full name is "Reduced Capability") is a key technology for medium-and high-speed IoT scenarios. It mainly extends 5G IoT applications for three medium-and high-speed application scenarios, such as wearable devices, industrial wireless sensors and video surveillance, and can achieve an effective balance in cost, bandwidth, power consumption and so on.

China Mobile Research Institute led 3GPP SA2 / SA5 / CT and other standard projects in the early stage, and led the formulation of TS 23.501, 23.502, 24.501, 23.122, 24.008 and other technical specifications. In order to further promote the maturity and rapid commercial use of the RedCap industry, China Mobile Research Institute, based on the development of the RedCap industry chain and relying on the rich experience of supporting network planning, construction, operation and maintenance, makes a detailed analysis of the impact on the network architecture, network element function, operation and maintenance after the introduction of RedCap technology, and focuses on carrying out technical experiments from two aspects:

First, end-to-end verification is carried out on the basic functions of RedCap, such as initial registration, interoperation, access control and PDU session establishment, to ensure the basic business experience of RedCap user access; at the same time, in order to support the characteristic package and business development of RedCap, this laboratory test also covers user identification, policy control, billing, header enhancement and other enhanced capabilities.

Second, the compatibility tests are carried out in five scenarios, such as all network elements are not upgraded, some network elements are not upgraded, and all network elements are not upgraded, and the comprehensive verification of each stage of RedCap network deployment evolution, such as initial state, intermediate state and target state, is realized.

China Mobile said that the end-to-end infield test of RedCap for 5G core network preliminarily verified the commercial feasibility of RedCap in 2B and 2C networks, provided reference and guidance for the next step of product research and development in industry, helped to make up for the shortcomings of Internet of things access and network capabilities in medium-and high-speed scenarios, and helped 5G enable vertical industries.
