Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com February 21 news, as an indispensable equipment in people's daily life and work, notebook computers carry a variety of needs such as office and entertainment. When users "heavily use" some high-performance software, they have high requirements for the instantaneous power of the computer.

In response to this demand, SMIC launched the first synchronous bi-directional buck charging control IC-SC8978x / SC89800 with hybrid power boost mode (HPB) and processor overpower monitoring function, which can provide greater instantaneous power at lower power supply power to meet the peak performance release of high-performance equipment.

Source PixabayCTOnews.com Note: the hybrid power boost mode (HPB) is characterized by allowing the battery reverse boost to power the system together with the adapter when the system load exceeds the output power of the adapter. While supplying power to the system directly, the adapter charges the battery pack through dynamic power management control, which makes full use of the power of the adapter and effectively reduces the power supply cost of the system. As the system power increases, the battery charging current will decrease to keep the adapter current within the adjustment range. If the system power continues to increase, the HPB boost mode will be triggered to replenish the system power. When HPB mode is applied to notebook computers, CPU and GPU can achieve their highest performance at the same time when they are "heavily used".

The SC8978x / SC89800 is packaged in 4mm x 4mm QFN-28 and supports a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 24V. Integrated NMOS drivers automatically switch system power between batteries and adapters, and support 1s to 4S battery charge management.

Both SC8978x and SC89800 adopt hybrid power boost architecture (Hybrid power boost). Through the SMBUS interface, users can flexibly set charging current, charging voltage, input current, current limit, switching frequency and other parameters. In addition, the charge and discharge current can also be set in real time through the external ILIM pin.

SC8978x / SC89800 conforms to Intel IMVP8 / IMVP9 specifications, including system power supply, input current, charging current monitoring, system power monitoring, processor overpower indication. Support comprehensive protection, including overtemperature protection, adapter and battery overvoltage protection, input MOSFET overcurrent protection, battery, inductor and MOSFET short circuit protection.

Product performance:

Transient response time: 150us enters HPB mode

HPB switching to charging mode is more stable.
