CTOnews.com February 20, Wine-CE is the compatibility layer for running Windows programs on Linux systems with different instruction set architectures, based on the Wine project and the Qemu project.

According to the video released by project developer Fan Wenjie on bilibili, in the latest Wine-CE 8.2, the front and rear ends have been decoupled and can be run on ARM and RISC-V platforms. It has been tested on the Starfive VisionFive2 RISC-V development board and successfully ran Windows x64 notepad.

According to reports, Wine-CE uses the self-created Chimera architecture, which is unnecessary and does not simulate. While using the modified QEMU to translate the PE file that executes client instructions, QEMU completes operations such as drawing by loading Wine's dynamic link library (native instruction set architecture).

As an emerging architecture, RISC-V has shipped more than 10 billion cores, but it suffers from less application adaptation. At present, it is mainly active in low-power embedded devices with low performance. Simulation support for Windows applications is expected to enhance the competitiveness of RISC-V.
