Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, February 20 (Xinhua)-- Samsung Electronics is accelerating its pursuit of automotive semiconductors in order to offset the downturn in the mobile market. However, Samsung Electronics currently focuses on "infotainment", a system that provides a variety of information and entertainment at the same time, unlike analog semiconductors such as the microcontroller unit (MCU) that controls the vehicle.
A number of South Korean media, including Digital Daily, reported today that Samsung Electronics is developing a system-on-chip (SoC) to supply BMW cars. Progress has been made through close cooperation, such as samples. Industry insiders said that the chip delivered to BMW will be a brand new "Exynos Auto V".
"Samsung Electronics is focusing on infotainment-related products in the field of self-driving," the industry insider said. Qualcomm, Nvidia and others will become competitors.
It is said that the V-series samples delivered this time are equipped with neural network processing units (NPU), so that AI computing provides support to recognize the driver's voice, face and movements.
It is worth mentioning that Samsung Electronics' infotainment chips have begun to supply Audi and Volkswagen. It is reported that Samsung is developing new products based on the 5-nanometer process, which will be supplied to Volkswagen and other companies. If the company can strike a deal with BMW, it will get another big customer.
It has previously worked with companies such as Tesla and Google on autopilot. After the contract manufacturing department produces chips for Tesla, Samsung is also providing chip design support for Google's self-driving car "Waymo". Of course, Samsung also seems to be working with Google on the mobile chip Tensor.
Last month, Samsung Electronics announced on a conference call in the fourth quarter of 2022 that "we have strengthened the foundation of medium-and long-term growth by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on product development with a US self-driving solutions company."
There is not much news about the cooperation between Samsung and BMW, and CTOnews.com will keep an eye on it.
