CTOnews.com, February 20, South Korea's Ministry of Information and Communications Technology said on Monday that South Korea plans to launch the sixth generation network service (6G) in 2028, two years ahead of schedule, in order to gain the dominance of future wireless frequencies as soon as possible.

According to the South Korean Ministry of Science and Information and Communications Technology, under the K-Network 2030 plan, the South Korean government will advance the launch of 6G network business services by two years by ensuring world-class 6G technology, innovating next-generation software-based mobile networks and strengthening the network supply chain.

At the same time, the South Korean government will also encourage local companies to produce materials, components and equipment for 6G technology in China, and develop an open RAN, that is, an open wireless access network, which is compatible with any mobile device, so that mobile operators and enterprises can provide flexible services.

The ministry said it was conducting a feasibility study on a 6G core technology research and development project worth 625.3 billion won (currently about 3.308 billion yuan) for the plan. This advanced program aims to help the country maintain a leading position in the global competition for future network infrastructure after the 5G network competition to meet the demand for higher-speed and lower-latency wireless communications.

South Korea has led the development of 5G with a high number of 5G patents, while previous 4G technology developments have been dominated by American and European companies, according to IPlytics, a German analysis firm. Asia's fourth-largest economy accounted for 25.9% of 5G patents last year, following market leader china's 26.8%. The South Korean government says it aims to increase that figure to 30 per cent or more in the upcoming 6G network patent competition.
