CTOnews.com, Feb. 20 (Xinhua)-- A 1000-pound meteorite is likely to explode over Texas on Wednesday afternoon, leaving debris scattered on the ground, NASA confirmed.

CTOnews.com learned that the meteorite, which is 2 feet in diameter, passed through the atmosphere around 6 p.m. on the 15th and disintegrated before falling to the ground near McCullen, Texas.

"the angle and speed at which the object entered the atmosphere, as well as the characteristics in weather radar images, are consistent with other naturally occurring meteorites," NASA said in a statement. The meteorite was also detected by its satellite system used to track lightning strikes, the National Weather Service in Brownsville, Texas said on Twitter. It is unlikely that the meteoroid will hit the ground directly, because the impact site has not been found.

Local residents said they heard a loud explosion, while others thought it was an earthquake, and many residents called the police, saying they heard a loud sonic boom, shaking the whole house and the ground, and birds flying everywhere. Some local residents said they felt the rattling of their windows, and the pilots of the two planes reported seeing a meteor in the sky near McCullen.
