CTOnews.com February 20 news, Taiwan Economic Daily reported that the industry reported that TSMC is no longer seriously tight due to consideration of supply and demand for automotive semiconductors, and that most automotive chip customers can transfer production to new plants in Japan, the United States, and other places, resulting in a delay in the construction of new plants in Europe, which will not start until 2025 at the earliest, about two years later than originally expected.

CTOnews.com learned that when TSMC held a law conference in January this year, it revealed that it was in contact with customers and partners to assess the possibility of setting up special-process wafer plants focusing on automotive technology in Europe based on customer needs and the support of governments. With regard to the rumor that the pace of the new plant in Europe has been delayed, TSMC said that it maintained its views at the previous legal meeting, but there was no updated response at present.

People in the industry pointed out that previously, automotive chips were hard to come by. In addition to speeding up capacity scheduling and production in Taiwan, new factories in Japan, Europe and other places also locked in the automotive field, but the current situation has changed. Major wafer generation factories all have more abundant capacity to dispatch and produce automotive chips, so that the shortage of chips can be improved to a certain extent, and even achieve a balance between supply and demand.

It was reported earlier in the market that TSMC has set up a factory in Europe and has sent a team to Germany and other places to inspect it twice. at one point, it was said that it was expected to be finalized as soon as this year. However, recently, Infineon, Renesas, Deyi and other major automotive chip manufacturers have released the news of large-scale investment and expansion one after another. if TSMC's plant in Europe is delayed, to some extent, it also means that the company's senior management sees that the market demand for automotive chips is loose. no longer as much as before out of stock, so hit the brakes.

Once the establishment of TSMC's plant in Europe is delayed, people in the industry analyze that its European automotive chip customers may later maintain TSMC's plant in Taiwan, or even transfer production to new plants in Japan, the United States, and other places, which will help TSMC to use overseas plant capacity.

According to industry analysis, if the pace of TSMC's European layout slows down, it is not a bad thing, especially if the market fluctuates greatly, coupled with high inflationary pressure, the cost of setting up factories in Europe is estimated to be much higher than that of the United States and Japan, and it will also cause more tests for TSMC's overseas presence.
