CTOnews.com February 20, Microsoft last week launched Windows 11 Dev preview version Build 25300, with real-time subtitles adjusted. Subsequently, CTOnews.com found that there are many hidden features in the new Dev system, such as opening the volume control interface through Win + Ctrl + V, ending the task process in the taskbar, and bringing Emoji 15 support.

Now, Windows explorer @ Albacore finds that "gallery / album" in 25300 seems to have some new features. He says this is a new feature based on XAML, which indicates that the main file browsing area will abandon DirectUI in the future. We can open it by enabling WASDK (Windows App SDK)-based file explorer.

Of course, WASDK File Explorer is certainly not hidden for no reason, it is quite unstable and a bit stuttered in the current experience, such as you can cause a crash when you drag a tab.

WASDK File Explorer looks no different from the default File Explorer, with identical icons, colors, and layouts.

How can you tell if you are using WASDK File Explorer? In fact, it is also very simple, the new version of WASDK File Explorer has a similar "pizza" icon in the toolbar. When you hover over it, it displays "you are previewing the Windows App SDK version of File Explorer".

After opening File Explorer, you can find the "gallery" (different from the "picture" in the middle bar) from the bottom of the "home page" at the top of the icon bar in the left pane.

When you click on it, the system displays a series of thumbnails in the gallery (sorted by file date), and when you hover over the right side of the window, a year navigation bar appears. Click on a specific year, such as 2012, to skip to the section created in 2012.

In addition, there is a search box in the upper-right corner of the window, but the feature is so crude that it doesn't even show a thumbnail preview of the image, and it can't search by image content. At least for now, it can only be searched by name.

By default, the new gallery will only grab pictures from OneDrive's Pictures, but you can also add other folder indexes, such as documents, to it through the location button in the toolbar.

Although it seems to be practical, this feature is still in the early stages of development and is easy to crash, so don't force it if you're not interested.

So, in the end, how do we enable the XAML gallery of Windows 11?

First, you need to install Windows Insider Build 25300, and then change the following registry values from 0 to 1:

HKLM\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Shell\ Update\ Packages\ MicrosoftWindows.Client.40729001_cw5n1h2txyewy\ Compatible.

Download the Vivetool tool from the GitHub page and extract it to any folder, but remember the folder path (for example, C:\ Program Files (x86)\ ViVeTool-v0.3.2)

Then start the terminal as an administrator (command prompt or PowerShell) and cut to the directory you just downloaded, such as "cd C:\ Program Files (x86)\ ViVeTool-v0.3.2", depending on what you like.

Then enter the following commands, each followed by an Enter.

Turn it all on and restart it, and then when you open File Explorer, you can see the "pizza" icon!

In addition, Microsoft introduced a new interface for "virtual disk creation" in 25300, but this is enabled by default.
