CTOnews.com, February 19, TSMC and Sony jointly built a semiconductor factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, and TSMC Wei Zhe Jia said at a legal conference in January this year that he was considering building a second factory in Japan. Sony said that the two sides have not yet discussed the issue of TSMC's "second plant in Japan".

TSMC's Zhongkumoto plant, located in Kiyang-cho, Kumamoto Prefecture, is scheduled to open in December 2024 and will be operated by Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), a foundry service subsidiary of Kumamoto Prefecture, with investments from Sony Semiconductor Solutions, Toyota Motor Group and Denso.

Shimizu Shimizu, president of Sony Semiconductor Corporation, said in an exclusive interview with Reuters that at this stage, the two sides have not discussed the matter and have not grasped TSMC's plan for a "second plant in Japan." TSMC should be based on demand assessment. If it can bring multiplication effect to Sony and TSMC, it is very welcome.

With regard to the US ban by Tuyuan Pexels, Shimizu Shimizu said export controls began last October, targeting monitors and sensors, but had an impact on performance of billions of yen, or less than 1 per cent of revenue.

In addition, Sony says it wants to increase its global market share (in terms of sales) of image sensors to 60% in 2025 from 53% in 2019, and Shimizu says it is making good progress.

According to the plan, the Kumamoto plant, which is scheduled to start production by the end of 2024, will be responsible for producing 22/28nm and 12/16nm process chips with a monthly production capacity of 55,000.
