Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Coje_He for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, February 19 (Xinhua)-- IA64, the Intel Anton architecture, is the instruction set architecture (ISA) used by the Intel 64-bit Anton series processors. This basic set of ISA specifications originated from Hewlett-Packard and was subsequently implemented by Intel in cooperation with it.

(CTOnews.com popular science: IA is the abbreviation of Intel Architecture Intel Architecture, 64 refers to 64-bit system. CPU that uses this architecture, including Itanium and Itanium 2. This architecture is not compatible with x86 and x86-64, and the system and software need to use a special version of IA-64)

The first Anton processor, codenamed Merced, was released in 2001. As of 2008, Anton ranked fourth among all deployed enterprises and systems, second only to x86-64 power and SPARC.

Tu Yuan Pixabay because the system is basically unused and unmaintained, Linux kernel developers have just discussed whether they should remove the discontinued Itanium / IA64 architecture from Intel and Hewlett-Packard, but the final result of the discussion is to let it continue for a while.

Ard Biesheuvel, Arm's chief software developer, posted on Wednesday that "the IA64 version of the Linux kernel is unmaintained. according to its only user, it has been broken for a month, but no one cares at all during this time." So Ard proposed to the community to remove it altogether, and Linux author Linus Torvalds was happy to give up IA64's support.

Linus said that if no one is willing to take the time to deal with the failure, then ending support for IA64 is the only option.

Then John Paul Adrian Glaubitz, a physicist and Debian maintainer, came forward and said he could save IA64 again, saying he had time to maintain the architecture and that he had an Anton server to test and boot remotely.

Although Intel only announced the official retirement of Anton in July 2021, the platform never really took off in those 20 years, because x86 servers did better during the same period. In fact, Intel stopped developing it as early as 2004, but by that time there were enough third-party users to show up, so Linux kernel support made sense.

Although this 20-something architecture is getting old, thanks to the kindness of Glaubitz, it seems that the last part of its life will last for a while.
