When Eberhard left Tesla in 2007, the company had not yet released its first car. Tesla was developing the Roadster, a small sports car based on the Lotus Elise. The Lotus Elise is a two-seater convertible first sold by the British Lotus Motor Company in 1996.

Eberhard says that while he appreciates "safety-oriented systems" such as assisted driving, he "doesn't like" autopilot very much. He said Mr. Musk seemed to be focused on self-driving cars, which he thought was one of his biggest concerns about Tesla under Mr. Musk.

Cars should not be like iPhone, Musk has been promising for years that Tesla will put fully self-driving cars on the road. Last year, the billionaire said Tesla's autopilot system was the difference between Tesla being worth a lot of money and almost worthless.

Today, Tesla is famous for his remote software updates. Mr Musk has said the company is "both a software company and a hardware company". But Eberhard disagrees with this approach.

"I think it's wrong to think of cars as software platforms, just like iPhone or anything else. But it's different, "Eberhard said." At present, all Tesla models are equipped with Autopilot. Tesla owners can also buy the company's FSD beta features for $15000 or through a monthly subscription. The beta function enables vehicles to automatically change lanes, enter and exit highways, identify stop signs and traffic lights, and stop. Both programs still require drivers with a driver's license to monitor the system all the time. Tesla's artificial intelligence system collects data from car owners in order to improve the system when drivers use it. As of December last year, more than 285000 people had purchased the feature.

In the past few years, Tesla has come under increasing scrutiny from regulators in terms of autopilot systems and marketing. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating Autopilot and its potential links to several accidents.

Eberhard and Musk have disagreed in the past. Eberhard filed a libel suit against Mr Musk in 2009 after he began calling himself the founder of Tesla and made negative comments about Mr Eberhard, which closed the case the same year. Since then, Musk has criticized Eberhard online.
