CTOnews.com, February 19 (Xinhua)-- Infineon said on Thursday that it has won approval to invest 5 billion euros (currently about 36.65 billion yuan) to start building a semiconductor plant in Dresden, Germany, which will start production in 2026.

The car and data center chipmaker said it would be the largest investment in its history. Infineon is seeking 1 billion euros in public funding for the plant, which the company says will create about 1000 jobs.

Infineon said the plant would produce power semiconductors and analog / mixed signal modules and that its annual income would be on a par with investment at full capacity. Analog / mixed signal components can be used in power supply systems such as energy-efficient charging systems, small car motor control units, data centers and Internet of things (IoT) applications. The interaction between power semiconductors and analog / mixed signal components makes it possible to create system solutions that are particularly energy efficient and intelligent.

The German Ministry of Economics approved the early start of the project, allowing construction to begin before the European Commission has completed its inspection of legal subsidies.

CTOnews.com has learned that the EU is seeking to strengthen semiconductor production amid a global chip shortage over the past two years. Under the Eurochip Act, the European Commission has allocated a total of 15 billion euros for public and private semiconductor projects by 2030.
