Modern APU and GPU mostly support decoding in the latest royalty-free format, while streaming and recording services have begun to implement AV1 support for their platforms. Apple's M1 and M2 chip families have yet to provide hardware acceleration for AV1 codecs.

Now things are going to change. Apple's Safari browser Beta beta now lists AV1-encoded MediaCapabilities API and WebRTC AV1 hardware decoders. According to the update log, these features are supported on devices with this capability, but no modern Apple product has this capability yet. In addition, Safari browsers are no longer available for Windows (Apple stopped providing updates in 2012), so fewer devices are supported.

CTOnews.com learned that the Safari update indicates that Apple is now preparing for future AV1 support for chips such as A17 or M3. Apple will join AMD, Intel and NVIDIA, which already support AV1 decoding and GPU graphics cards for more powerful coding.
