CTOnews.com, February 17, Toshiba Electronic components and Storage Devices Co., Ltd. ("Toshiba") announced that its near-line hard disk production line has been completed in Dongguan with Xinke Industrial Co., Ltd. (SAE), a wholly-owned subsidiary of head manufacturer TDK Co., Ltd. (AFIT). The production capacity of this production line will be given priority to the Chinese market. With the completion of the new production line and existing capacity, Toshiba is expected to double its capacity by 2025.

Tuyuan PexelsCTOnews.com learned that the report shows that Toshiba's hard disk shipments and shipping capacity increased by 4% and 61% respectively in 2021, with a total shipment of 54.68 million units and a capacity of 187.5EB, of which near-line hard disk shipments increased by 73% and shipping capacity soared by 114%.

Toshiba has developed a variety of new technologies, including FC-MAMR (Magnetic Energy Control-Microwave assisted recording), MAS-MAMR (resonant Microwave assisted recording) and disk stacking. Toshiba hopes to achieve the 30TB hard disk capacity target first, and then move towards higher capacity products.

Near-line hard disk is mainly located in the application between customer online storage and offline storage. Refers to the storage of data that is not often used, or does not have a large amount of data access, on a low-performance storage device. But at the same time, the requirements for these devices are fast addressing and high transmission rate. Near-line storage requires relatively low performance, but requires relatively good access performance and large capacity.
