According to the monthly user data released by Google's parent company Alphabet, Facebook parent company Meta and Twitter, the number of users in the European Union has all exceeded the regulatory threshold. This means that these companies will face stricter online content censorship.

The new EU regulation, known as the Digital Services Act (DSA), will force tech giants to do more to deal with illegal content or face fines equivalent to up to 6 per cent of global turnover.

Under the bill, platforms with more than 45 million users are considered "super-large online platforms" and will be subject to risk management, as well as external and independent auditing obligations. They are also required to share data with regulators and researchers.

The European Commission requires online platforms and search engines to publish their monthly active users by February 17. Very large online platforms have a four-month buffer period to comply with the Digital Services Act, otherwise they will face the risk of fines.

Twitter has said it has an average of 100.9 million monthly users in the European Union, based on data over the past 45 days.

Google's parent company Alphabet provides one set of monthly user data based on user accounts and another set of monthly user data based on unlogged-in accounts because users can access their services regardless of whether they log in or not.

According to Alphabet, Google Maps (Google Maps) has an average of 278.6 million login users per month, Google Store (Google Play) has 274.6 million login users, Google search (Google Search) has 332 million login users, Google Shopping (Google Shopping) has 7490 million login users, while YouTube has an average of 401.7 million login users.

Earlier this week, Meta said it had an average of 255 million monthly active users of its Facebook app in the EU in the second half of 2022, while the average number of monthly active users of its Instagram app was about 250 million.
