OpenAI, the AI research company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT, said it is working to reduce bias and bad behavior in the system and will allow users to customize some of the chatbot's behavior. Previously, there have been numerous reports of ChatGPT interacting improperly with users and resulting in errors.

OpenAI admitted in a blog post posted on its company website: "Since the launch of ChatGPT, users have shared a lot of output that they find biased, offensive or otherwise objectionable. In many cases, we recognize these concerns, they reveal real limitations of our system, and so we want to address them. "

The company continued: "We are investing in research and engineering to reduce the obvious and subtle biases ChatGPT has in responding to different inputs. In some cases, ChatGPT currently rejects outputs that it should not reject. In other cases, it does not refuse when it should. "

OpenAI's move is in response to reports of bias, inaccurate results and misconduct on ChatGPT itself, as well as broader criticism from Microsoft and Google of new AI search products currently being tested. In a blog post posted Wednesday, Microsoft reportedly detailed the limitations of its new Bing chat tool based on OpenAI technology, while Google has also asked employees to invest more time in manually improving the answers to its Bard system.

OpenAI also said it is ramping up development efforts on ChatGPT, including allowing limited customization per user to suit their tastes, styles and views.

OpenAI wrote in the blog post: "We believe AI should be a useful tool for everyone, so everyone should be able to customize it within the limits of society. This would mean allowing system outputs that others (including ourselves) might strongly disagree with. Striking the right balance between taking customisation to extremes that could lead to malicious use of our technology or give rise to 'sycophantic AI' that blindly amplifies people's existing beliefs will be challenging. Therefore, system behavior always needs to be limited. "
