CTOnews.com, February 16, the programming language Kotlin, founded by software tool maker JetBrains, made its debut in 2011 and launched version 1.0 in 2016. The following year, Kotlin was adopted by Google as the first (supported) language developed by Android, and the latest version of Kotlin is version 1.8.0.

According to the official JetBrains announcement, Kotlin 2.0 is coming and the Kotlin compiler (code name K2) is coming.

JetBrains said it plans to release another version with traditional version control, Kotlin 1.9, which will also include ongoing development updates from the K2 compiler front end as it is close to stability. There will be no Kotlin 1.10 in the future. The next major release after Kotlin 1.9 will be Kotlin 2.0.

The front end is part of the compiler and is responsible for parsing code and performing semantic analysis, data flow analysis, call parsing, and type inference. This is the part where developers interact most with compilers. The compiler also uses it to run continuously in IDE, reporting all error and warning messages, and helping with tasks such as automatic completion, semantic awareness checking, intent, and refactoring.

The compiler front end in Kotlin 2.0 will be completely rewritten based on the new architecture, claiming to be faster and more extensible in design, resolving the technical debt of the old compiler front end, correcting errors and extremes in various locations, and paving the way for future language expansion.

In addition, officials have deliberately avoided introducing any new features into Kotlin 2.0, thereby minimizing the impact of migration of user code from Kotlin 1.9 to Kotlin 2.0.

According to JetBrains, the current focus is on the beta-quality version of the front end of the K2 compiler later this year. Starting from Kotlin 1.8.20, CTOnews.com friends can use the regular Kotlin language version logo to enable the preview of the Kotlin 2.0 language version.
