CTOnews.com AMD admitted in March 2022 that Ryzen processors caused intermittent stuttering in Win10 and Win11 systems after enabling fTPM (firmware-based trusted platform module). This issue was initially limited to Windows platforms, but now Linux distributions are also affected.

This BUG is most evident in the Linux 6.1 kernel, triggered mainly after the hardware random number generator (hwrng) enables kernel multithreading (kthread) for untrusted sources. For example, setting the hwrng source to quality setting of zero triggers.

AMD technician Mario Limonciello recommended disabling fTPM hwrng on affected Ryzen and Athlon systems, CTOnews.com translated as follows:

AMD has issued a bulletin stating that enabling fTPM in the BIOS causes the operating system to "jam." This issue has been fixed in a new version of the fTPM firmware, but it is up to the system designer to decide whether to distribute it.

This problem has been around for a while, but it is more common in Linux 6.1. Because under proposal b006c439d58db (hwrng:core -also starts hwrng kthread for untrusted sources), hwrng starts using fTPM by default. However, all use of/dev/ hwrng results in unacceptable stuttering.
