Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen IcyRockton for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, February 16, Tesla's new self-driving computer, hardware 4.0 (HW4), has been leaked, and the company seems to be building some cars with new systems.
We have known that Tesla has been preparing to upgrade his autopilot hardware for some time. Tesla had previously applied to the Federal Communications Commission to add a new radar to his vehicle and said it planned to go on sale in January, and that the new radar would mean that Tesla planned to update his Autopilot and FSD sensor kits.
The hardware change is a pressure on Tesla owners because the carmaker has always promised that all vehicles it has built since 2016 have all the hardware needed to drive itself through software updates. It turned out not to be the case, because Tesla needed more powerful computers, so he launched HW3, but the company did offer free upgrades to existing car owners.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously confirmed that Tesla will not provide a free upgrade to HW4, but he said he still plans to use HW3 to realize his promise of autopilot, and HW4 will only push performance higher.
Blogger Green The Only managed to get a new HW4 computer from a new Model X car and disassembled it. He said that compared to the HW3.0,4.0 hardware size has become larger, the interface is completely different, the previous 3.0 can not be upgraded, which is also in line with Musk's previous statement.
Tesla's self-driving computer is combined with an infotainment computer, which has also been updated in this HW4 upgrade. "the infotainment system has been redesigned compared to current devices," Green said of the change. "the GPU is now on the same board, so there is no more GPU daughter board. This makes the whole device thinner and nothing else has changed-the same 256g NVMe storage and 16GB memory, the same AMD CPU and GPU."
As for the Tesla HW4 computer itself, Green said the upgrade was smaller than expected and was still based on Samsung Exynos-IP, but this time it increased the number of CPU cores from 12 to 20 (5 clusters, 4 cores per cluster), the maximum frequency was 2.35GHz, the idle frequency was 1.37GHz, the number of trip cores increased from 2 to 3, and the maximum frequency of 2.2GHz.
However, he noted that HW4 has made some improvements in security. But at the same time, the new circuit board consumes more power than HW3 in its spare time. In addition, Tesla also improves the redundancy of the system, the configuration is double, and the overall design of the motherboard is also very symmetrical, which is obviously very important in self-driving cars.
In terms of sensors, the interface of the motherboard can provide us with more information about the new sensors in HW4. Tesla has been moving towards a vision-based approach, canceling his radar and ultrasonic sensors with great fanfare.
According to HW4, Tesla seems to be adding more cameras. Currently, Tesla has eight cameras in his hardware suite, but now the new computer has 12 camera interfaces, although one interface is marked as "standby". Judging from the naming of the interface, Tesla will change the front windshield cameras to two, while adding two side cameras and a front bar camera, suggesting that Tesla may provide 360 look function.
In addition, the GPS module should also be upgraded and is now a three-band GPS antenna module.
Finally, Green also found evidence that Tesla reintegrated radar into his sensor kit. HW4.0 has a forward radar and a radar heating system.
CTOnews.com learned that after Tesla stopped using his radar in June last year, Musk said that pure vision would be more secure than vision + radar, not lower. Vision has become so good that radar actually reduces the signal-to-noise ratio. However, he also said that if there was a "very high resolution radar", Tesla might still use radar.
It is not clear when Tesla plans to officially launch the new HW4, but investors' Day on March 1 may be a good time.
