CTOnews.com, February 15 (Xinhua)-- A banking union made up of Norwegian payment app giant Vipps and others wants to see the European Union take antitrust action against Apple unless Apple Pay's NFC technology is opened up.
The European Union held a closed-door hearing on Tuesday on Apple's alleged antitrust practices, but after the hearing, Vipps, a Norwegian payments company, said it wanted to see decisive action against Apple's Apple Pay.
Vipps attended the hearing, according to Reuters. The EU has not yet released its findings after the closed-door meeting, but Vipps's decision to speak could be a sign that Apple's statement is persuasive.
Regardless of the hearing, Vipps said the EU should now force Apple to allow its NFC technology.
"78 per cent of Norwegian bank card transactions are done through terminals," said Rune Garborg, chief executive of Vipps. "that's why NFC is so important, especially among young people."
Vipps attended a closed-door EU meeting at which Apple is expected to argue that it does not preclude other companies from using NFC technology.
"but Apple only shares NFC with banks, which have to pay for installing bank cards in Apple Pay. But for our wallets, we don't have access to open NFC." Rune Garborg said.
CTOnews.com learned that Vipps belongs to the Norwegian bank consortium, and the company has tried alternatives to NFC, but they are too cumbersome to compete.
Apple did not comment on Vipps's statement. However, Apple has previously defended its position as part of its response to the EU investigation.
"We designed Apple Pay to provide users with a simple and secure way to display their existing payment cards digitally and to allow banks and other financial institutions to provide contactless payments to customers. Apple Pay is just one of many options for European consumers to pay, ensuring equal use of NFC and setting industry-leading standards for privacy and security."
