February 15, according to people familiar with the matter, AI chat robot ChatGPT developer OpenAI quietly hired at least five Google AI researchers in the months before its launch. They played an important role in helping to improve ChatGPT and supported its launch in November 2022.

Google has two of the most famous AI research teams in the world, but OpenAI has launched ChatGPT in a short time, which has caused a global sensation in recent months and attracted tens of millions of people to use it. Google leaders even see the product as a potential threat to its search engine. Practitioners and investors in the AI industry want to know how a seven-year-old startup beat Google.

As it turns out, OpenAI has a secret weapon: recruiting outgoing Google AI researchers. OpenAI has been recruiting Google employees to do AI research, according to people familiar with the matter. In recent months, the company has hired more than a dozen outgoing Google employees. At least five of them helped OpenAI launch ChatGPT by the end of last year.

In the thank you section of OpenAI's blog post announcing the launch of ChatGPT, the company mentioned the names of the researchers, including Barret Zoph, Liam Fedus, Luke Metz, Jacob Menick and Rapha Gontijo Lopes.

At the time of writing, however, only Zoff and Metz updated their profiles on LinkedIn, a professional social networking site, indicating that they did participate in OpenAI's chat robot project. ChatGPT has proved to be very popular with users, accumulating more than 1 million users in just seven days of launch. According to reports, the popularity of ChatGPT prompted Google management to issue a "code red" warning in December.

Two former employees of Google Brain, the Alphabet AI division, said some employees felt that Google's corporate culture had become drowsy. Employees also mentioned layers of red tape and being too cautious about new product plans, prompting many to leave and look for opportunities at other companies.

Google seems to be engaged in a tense race with Microsoft to bring new products to market. Microsoft is an important investor in OpenAI. Both tech giants have announced plans to integrate large language models (LLM) into Bing and Google search respectively. Bing has already opened up the new technology to some users, and Google announced last week that its AI search will be available to "trusted testers" before it will be launched more widely.

Google and OpenAI didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
