Tesla employees in New York State are launching a union movement that could lead to Tesla's first union, the latest labor challenge facing Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The employees, who tag data for Autopilot at Tesla's Buffalo, N.Y., factory, sent Musk an email early Tuesday expressing their intention to unionize. Employees say they are seeking better pay and job security, as well as reducing productivity pressures that are harmful to their health.

The employees said in interviews that Tesla monitors buttons to track how much time employees spend on each task and how much time they actively work each day. Six employees said that caused some people to be afraid to go to the toilet.

"People are tired of being treated like robots. "Al Celli, a member of the trade union organizing committee, said.

If successful, it would be Tesla's first union. Unlike other leading automakers, Tesla has successfully resisted unionization at its U.S. plants in the past. "Unionization will further accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy because it will give us a voice in the workplace and in the goals we set for ourselves. Tesla employees said in a letter to management. They also urged the company to agree to a set of principles limiting anti-union tactics.

The campaign by Tesla employees is also a new test for the U.S. labor movement, which has recently won a series of victories at long-standing nonunionized companies such as Amazon, Apple and Starbucks.

Musk and Tesla's human resources chief have not yet commented. Tesla disbanded its PR team in 2020.
