XR applications include AR (augmented reality), VR (virtual reality) and MR (hybrid reality). There are two typical XR devices: immersive headwear and smart glasses.

Senior research analyst Kimi Lin commented on the new data as follows: "shipments of near-eye display panels fell to 14.382 million in 2022, down 1.3% from a year earlier, lower than expected. Although Omdia has significantly lowered its long-term forecast, we remain optimistic about 2023 as major products such as Sony PSVR 2, Apple's mixed reality (MR) and Meta Quest 3, as well as HTC's new products will be launched in 2023, which is expected to lead to a new round of market growth. "

In terms of revenue, the revenue from near-eye display panel of XR applications reached $620 million in 2022 (currently about 4.228 billion yuan), and is expected to increase to $1.15 billion in 2023 (currently about 7.843 billion yuan), marking the first time that revenue from near-eye display panels of XR applications will exceed the $1 billion mark.

CTOnews.com learned that the report says the near-eye display panel of the VR app still accounts for the vast majority of shipments. Considering the complexity of AR near-eye display panels and optical engines, Omdia believes that AR near-eye display panel technology will take three to five years to mature.

OLEDoS is the mainstream panel at present, but the brightness of OLEDoS can not meet the needs of outdoor use of AR equipment. This provides a good opportunity for silicon-based Micro LED or LEDoS.
