"Microsoft Edge updates will disable IE11 desktop browsers and are designed to provide a better user experience and help organizations transition IE11 users to Microsoft Edge," Microsoft said.

Unsupported Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) desktop applications are scheduled to be permanently disabled on some versions of Windows 10 devices through Microsoft Edge updates (rather than the Windows updates previously communicated) on February 14, 2023.

Microsoft plans to start redirecting all remaining devices that have not been redirected from IE11 to Microsoft Edge by releasing Microsoft Edge updates on February 14, 2023.

The change to disable IE with Microsoft Edge updates is designed to provide a better user experience and help organizations convert their last remaining IE11 users to Microsoft Edge. As a reminder, IE11 has not been supported since June 15, 2022.

When you plan to permanently disable IE11 desktop applications on February 14, 2023, organizations that have transitioned from IE11 to Microsoft Edge with IE mode will not be affected.

Note: if you want to delete IE visual object references on the taskbar or the start menu, you need to use the disable IE policy until February 14, 2023. If the organization is still dependent on IE11, it must take immediate steps to complete the conversion by February 14, 2023, or face the risk of large-scale business disruption when users cannot access IE11-dependent applications.

IE11 visual references, such as the start menu and the IE11 icon on the taskbar, will be removed in the June 2023 Windows monthly Security Update ("B" version) scheduled for June 13, 2023.
