On February 14, Andy Jassy, CEO of retail giant Amazon, said that generative artificial intelligence (AIGC) like ChatGPT is exciting, but Amazon has been developing similar technology for a long time.

While Amazon already has AI and machine learning technologies, such as its voice assistant Alexa and code recommendation generator CodeWhisperer, supporters of the company worry that the tech giant is lagging behind in AIGC.

In a recent interview with the British media, Jassi claimed that Amazon has been committed to developing AIGC for a long time. "I think AIGC is really exciting, and you can see its great potential in models like ChatGPT," he said. "but large and highly technical companies like ours have been developing this kind of technology for a long time."

AIGC is an algorithm that can generate new text, image, code, video, or audio at the prompt. Matt McIlwain, managing director of Madrona Venture Group, an early investor in Amazon, said: "Microsoft is clearly in the lead and has won a lot of attention in this regard. Amazon must recognize the trend of intelligent generative applications and need to develop a strategy accordingly."

Jassi pointed out that while developing independently, Amazon is also looking for opportunities to explore the AIGC area with smaller companies, but he did not give further details. The most prominent example is Stability AI, a competitor to Microsoft-backed OpenAI. Recently, Stability AI announced that Amazon is its "preferred cloud partner" for training and building AI models.

Amazon's attempts in the AIGC space include Alexa, which was launched in 2014. David Limp, the company's senior vice president in charge of devices and services, said Amazon was improving Alexa to make it more conversational, and that currently the model could only answer questions with preset answers.

Lip says that while ChatGPT is a "serious rival" to Alexa, it lacks the personality, memory and knowledge of current events that Alexa has. "if you ask Alexa about the details of the World Cup, such as who scored in which game, Alexa can provide a precise answer," he said. "so far, ChatGPT doesn't know that."

Lip added: "Real-time knowledge is as important as the ability to write a script, and GPT has done a good job in this respect. Today, Alexa already has a strong ability to personalize, such as remembering your favorite type of music."

It is reported that Amazon employees have recently used Slack internal channels to seek guidance on how to use ChatGPT at work. After a response similar to Amazon's internal data, a company lawyer advised employees not to share any confidential company data with ChatGPT.

Some Amazon employees use chatbots as "coding assistants", asking it to improve internal lines of code. Amazon is developing a wide range of technologies similar to ChatGPT, according to people familiar with the matter.
