According to reports, a video posted by NASA on social media Twitter shows a bulge of the sun's north pole breaking off from the pole and spinning in a huge polar whirlpool. NASA says this is a huge plasma filament, or electrochemical gas, that looks like a slender, uneven line shooting from the surface of the sun, attracted by the sun's magnetism.

Astronomers are confused. They speculate that the bulge is related to the reversal of the sun's magnetic field, which occurs in every solar cycle, and the bulge will appear precisely at 55 degrees latitude around the sun's polar cap every 11 years.

Although astronomers have observed filaments away from the sun before, this is the first time a filament has been observed circulating in the area in the form of a tornado.
