CTOnews.com, February 13, TechInsights (formerly Strategy Analtyics) released a report today that the global smartphone application processor (AP) market grew 17% in 2022 to $10 billion (currently about 68.1 billion yuan). Among them, Apple, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung LSI and Ziguang Zhanrui rank in the top five in the smartphone application processor (AP) market.

▲ source: according to the TechInsights report, Apple leads the smartphone application processor market with 36% of revenue, slightly ahead of Qualcomm. MediaTek ranks third with a 22% market share.

5G application processor shipments accounted for 52.5% of total Q3 smartphone application processor shipments in 2022.

Shipments of 7nm / 6nm-based smartphone application processors fell 21% month-on-month in Q3 in 2022, due to significant weakness in MediaTek's mid-range 5G chips.

Driven by the relationship between Apple, Qualcomm, MediaTek and Ziguang, TSMC maintained an 80% share of the Q3 smartphone application processor contract market in 2022.

Shipments of Android smartphone app processors fell 4% month-on-month in 2022.

TechInsights said Qualcomm once again benefited from shipments of its highly mixed high-end Snapdragon 8 series application processors. Although unit shipments fell 23%, Qualcomm's revenue increased by 32% due to the higher average selling price of its high-end application processors. The smartphone app processor market is increasingly driven by processor content, and research shows that the average selling price of Qualcomm's smartphone app processor increased by 71% in 2022.

CTOnews.com has learned that TechInsights expects the mid-market to come back to life when China OEM clears its inventory and starts ordering in mid-2023. High-end application processors also weakened in the second half of 2022, but are likely to pick up from Q1 in 23, driven by the release of new flagship devices from Samsung and China's OEM.
