Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, February 12 (Reuters)-the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said this week that the US request to modify aircraft altimeters to ensure that they are not affected by 5G interference could cost the industry at least $637 million (currently about 4.338 billion yuan).

In comments submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), IATA said the cost would be much higher than the agency's estimate of $26 million (currently about 177 million yuan). The group warned last week that many airlines were at risk of failing to meet deadlines.

"unless the FAA and the US government take a different approach to this interference, one can expect flight disruptions after the March and July deadlines," IATA said on Thursday local time.

The FAA proposed in January to require US passenger and cargo aircraft to be equipped with 5G C-band compatible radio altimeters or approved 5G signal shielding equipment by early 2024. CTOnews.com learned that it said on Thursday that it would review all comments.

Previously, Verizon and AT&T voluntarily agreed to postpone the use of some of the 5G C-band until July 1, 2023. At the same time, airlines are working to revamp their aircraft to ensure that they are not disturbed.

The International Air Transport Association said the cost per aircraft was higher than the FAA's estimate, saying it should include the cost of 6000 modified aircraft and non-U.S.-registered aircraft that will be affected.

According to the report, operators spent more than $80 billion (currently about 544.8 billion yuan) on the 5G C-band, including $52.9 billion spent on auction and clearing fees by Verizon. FCC, AT&T and Verizon had no immediate comment.
