CTOnews.com February 9, Samsung India Semiconductor announced that Samsung Semiconductor India Research Institute (SSIR) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) will work together to promote semiconductor research and development in India. The cooperation between SSIR and IISc will help promote research in the field of on-chip electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. The official announcement revolves around the construction of ESD devices (electrostatic resistors) to protect ultra-high-speed serial interfaces in advanced IC and SoC products.

Samsung SSIR said that the cooperation with IISc will help promote semiconductor innovation and develop ESD knowledge. The goal is to strengthen capacity-building through graduate-level training programmes to provide industry internships for students and to encourage young researchers to start businesses.

Research related to the agreement between Samsung Semiconductor Institute of India (SSIR) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) will be carried out by a team of Professors Mayank Shrivastava of the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering (DESE) of IISc. CTOnews.com learned that the main purpose of this cooperation is to reduce the failure and rework of IC and SoC chips caused by ESD failures.

Strengthening research and development to build ESD for reliable, low-power and high-speed IC and SOoC will be the agenda of this cooperation. IISc is one of the few institutions engaged in the research of ESD devices in the world.

Professor Mayank Shrivastava, head of MSDLab, said: "We have been working extensively with the global semiconductor industry on advanced nanoelectronics technology, including solutions to advanced SoC ESD reliability threats. We have conducted basic research and application research on ESD protection devices, focusing on creating practical solutions for the semiconductor industry at a range of technology nodes."
