CTOnews.com, Feb. 9 (Xinhua)-- an international team of astrophysicists published a study on PLOS Climate on Wednesday, proposing to shoot lunar dust into space to help block the sun's rays directly to Earth and curb global warming.

The team modeled a variety of scenarios, showing that building a shield of dust between the earth and the sun can reduce the amount of energy the sun shines on the earth by 1-2%, covering up to six days.

The team also says the idea is not perfect. The amount of material needed to actually shield the sun is more than 10 billion kilograms (22 billion pounds), about 100 times the mass of objects sent into space by humans.

The team considered different types of dust, scattering characteristics and sizes. The team found that fluffy and highly porous particle aggregates scattered light best, but they chose a particle that might be more accessible in space: lunar dust.
