Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, February 9 (Xinhua)-- Astronomical scientists have been able to delve deeper into the structure of compact clusters in galaxies based on images taken by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The study was recently published in the monthly Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society (Royal Astronomical Society).
Albert Einstein developed his general theory of relativity at the beginning of the 20th century and is known as "the pearl of the existing physical theory". The theory also predicts that massive objects such as stars can bend light passing nearby. CTOnews.com saw from the latest photos sent back by JWST that light bends as it passes through these massive objects.
Massive objects such as stars use gravitational lenses (gravitational lensing), which use the gravitational pull of star clusters to achieve a magnifying glass effect that bends and enhances light passing nearby.
Adelaide Claeyssens, the lead author of the paper and from the department of astronomy at Stockholm University, explained:
As Einstein predicted in 1915, the galaxy clusters we found are so large that they bend the light that passes through their center. This in turn produces a magnifying glass effect: the image of the background galaxy is magnified.
