Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, February 9 (Xinhua)-- Google's AR and VR work has been led by Clay Bavor for the past few years, but the executive will leave Google next month.
Bavo has been at Google since 2005, leading product management and design for Gmail, Google Drive, Docs and Google Apps for Enterprise (now Google Workspace) as vice president in 2013. In 2015, he began to lead Google's AR / VR work and several related projects, including Cardboard and Daydream in the early days of Google's interest in virtual reality, as well as Daydream View and independent Daydream VR. Google has also launched a series of VR180 cameras with double fisheye lenses to simplify virtual reality shooting.
Google stopped selling Daydream View headlines in 2019, and Android 11 abandoned its operating system-level support. CTOnews.com learned that in terms of AR, the company today has Google Lens Visual search, Google Maps Live View Navigation, and ARCore. Just this month, Android announced a XR partnership with Samsung.
In November 2021, Bavo became vice president of the laboratory division, "focusing on extrapolating technological trends and incubating a range of high-potential long-term projects", including augmented reality and Project Starline.
Google is rumored to be developing a new AR called Project Iris and acquired AR glasses company North in 2020. The company is also testing AR with Glass Enterprise in combination with Pixel phones with Tensor processors, and the company also demonstrated AR translation glasses at the 2022 I / O conference.
Bavo announced his departure in a LinkedIn post this morning: "after 18 years at Google, today is the time to share the company I co-founded with my old friend Brett Taylor."
He will stay on until March and "focus on helping my team and projects make the transition and finish it off at Google".
According to 9to5Google, Google's work on AR will now be led by Hiroshi Lockheimer and Rick Osterloh. The AR work previously headed by Bavo will be transferred to Lockheimer's platform and ecosystem division and Osterloh's equipment and services division, the source said. As a result, no one will directly replace Bavo's role.
