In terms of new features, Android 14 has enhanced support for devices with various screen sizes, focusing on tablets and foldable devices, based on Android 12L and Android 13. Google provides guidelines to help developers create better applications for tablets and collapsible devices. In terms of cross-device work, Google pointed out that cross-device SDK will support cross-device audio switching announced earlier this year.

There are also background enhancements to improve and simplify the collaborative work of applications, with a focus on improving battery life and system health. Some examples include improving JobScheduler, Foreground Services, optimizing the broadcast of applications in the background, and precise alarm permissions.

Privacy and security updates for Android 14 include changes to the way dynamic code loads work to help mitigate the use of malware and vulnerabilities in dynamically downloaded code.

This update will also prevent older applications with SDK version 22 or earlier from being installed on Android 14 devices. This means that applications will need to use at least a level of 23 API, which is at least compatible with Android 6, which will be released in 2015.

Google has also added developer tools, such as OpenJDK 17 support and improved change testing, to switch changes through adb commands or developer options on the device.

The first version of Android 14 was specifically designed for developers to give them time to process and integrate API changes into their applications. The official version of Android 14 is expected to be released in late summer or early autumn.
