CTOnews.com February 8, Texas Instruments recently released low-power 60GHz millimeter wave radar sensors IWRL6432 and AWRL6432. Radar-based sensor integrated circuit (IC) has become a commonly used sensing technology because of its long-range detection ability, high motion sensitivity and privacy protection. With its high precision, radar sensors are widely used in automotive and industrial markets, such as blind spot detection, collision detection, personnel presence and motion detection.

In recent years, 60GHz and 77GHz radar sensors have replaced 24GHz radar sensors with higher resolution, higher accuracy and smaller size. The 60GHz and 77GHz radar bands also support a variety of new applications, such as detection of the presence of children in vehicles and fall detection of the elderly in hospitals.

Texas Instruments says new radar sensors such as IWRL6432 and AWRL6432 have lower power consumption due to their low-power architecture and can support the use of radar in industrial, personal electronics and automotive applications. Low-power radar with built-in sleep mode and efficient operating duty cycle allows the sensor system to detect motion and intelligently determine the timing of action, with a power budget within 5mW. These characteristics enable high-performance radar sensors to be used in battery-powered applications and applications with limited line power.

New radar sensors such as IWRL6432 and AWRL6432 support deep sleep mode, and the average power consumption at low duty cycle is only from 2mW to 5mW. Examples of supported applications include:

Movement and presence detection to achieve home and office environment security.

Intelligent thermostat and HVAC system can automatically control the temperature by testing the occupancy of personnel.

Lawnmowers, vacuum cleaners and service robots can sense small objects even in the dark and provide users with more comfort through higher efficiency.

CTOnews.com learned that by integrating small 60GHz radar sensors, laptops can now sense the presence of bystanders. The TV can detect the presence of a person and turn it on automatically. It can also detect gestures and provide a personalized user experience. Fitness equipment and smartwatches can estimate heart rate and breathing rate, provide health-related information and enable people to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Starting from 2025, the European Union New car Safety Evaluation Association (Euro NCAP) will give higher scores to vehicles that can perceive and remind children to stay in the car after parking. Low-power 60GHz millimeter wave radar sensors can help automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEM) meet regulatory requirements such as Euro NCAP, while optimizing the total cost of sensor systems by extending the functionality of a single sensor.

High-performance 60GHz radar sensor has good performance in vehicle application because of its detection sensitivity and motion classification ability. However, they need to meet the requirements of ultra-low power consumption in order to replace the ultrasonic sensors commonly used in intrusion detection.
