Indonesia already produces about half of the world's nickel, and its cobalt production will more than double this year, according to benchmark Mineral Intelligence (Benchmark Mineral Intelligence). Indonesia's share of global cobalt production will rise from about 1 per cent in 2021 to nearly 20 per cent by 2030.

Capacity expansion in Indonesia has also helped to ease concerns about tight cobalt supplies. The global benchmark cobalt price has more than halved since May last year and has fallen 13 per cent so far this year.

Analysts believe Indonesia's expansion is "reshaping the global supply chain to some extent".
