CTOnews.com, February 8, according to foreign technology media AppleInsider, Apple recently obtained a new design patent, indicating that the Apple Watch can be removed from the watch strap and used as a small handheld device in the future.

"watches and other wearable devices are popular with consumers because of their portability and aesthetic appeal," Apple said in a design patent called Watch Having a Release Mechanism. "Unfortunately, there are many limitations on the functions provided by existing wearable devices."

Apple showed off the removable Apple Watch design in the patent, saying: "this allows the user to remove the watch from the wrist and then use the sensor function of the watch in other scenarios."

CTOnews.com inquired about the description in the patent, which said: "the connection mechanism of the watch can integrate new or useful functions into the watch shell, extending more possibilities."
