"protecting the labour force is important to our long-term growth," Shuntaro Furukawa, Nintendo president, said at the earnings conference.

For companies that can do so, higher wages may also help them attract talent, the report said. Because of the declining birth rate and the low number of immigrants, there is a serious labor shortage in Japan.

Nintendo cut its operating profit for the year to March 31 by 4 per cent to 480 billion yen (currently about 24.624 billion yuan), well below Refinitiv's forecast of 582 billion yen, according to the data.

In addition, Nintendo cut its annual software sales forecast to 205 million from 210m and its Switch console sales target from 19 million to 18 million.

Toshitaro Furukawa pointed out that Nintendo does not plan to raise the price of software or game consoles, but will consider doing so if the situation requires. CTOnews.com learned that he declined to comment when asked if the company was considering a successor to the six-year-old Switch.
