CTOnews.com February 7 news, Canalys released a report today that global shipments of personal computers (including tablets) fell 21% year-on-year to 105 million units in the fourth quarter of 2022. This brings shipments of personal computers and tablets to 434 million in 2022, down 13% from nearly 500 million in 2021.
Canalys said tablet shipments remained resilient in the fourth quarter, up 1 per cent from a year earlier to 42.3 million units and 150 million units by the end of 2022, down 5 per cent from 2021.
In addition, shipments of Chromebook laptops reached 3.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2022, down 10 per cent from a year earlier. Shipments reached 17.7 million units in 2022, down 48 per cent from the peak in 2021.
CTOnews.com learned that the report noted that global tablet shipments increased after three consecutive quarters of decline, with a slight 1 per cent year-on-year increase in the fourth quarter of 2022.
Thanks mainly to the launch of the new M2 iPad, Apple remains firmly at the top of the market, with 19 million units shipped and a 46 per cent global market share.
Samsung ranked second with 7.6 million units shipped, with a 10% increase in shipments and a market share of 18%.
Amazon shipped 3.5 million units, down 10% from a year earlier and ranked third.
Lenovo and Huawei ranked fourth and fifth with decreases of 51% and 36%, respectively.
Total shipments from other manufacturers increased slightly by 4%.
In terms of Chromebook laptop shipments:
Hewlett-Packard topped the list and was the only manufacturer to grow in the fourth quarter of 2022, with shipments up 117% from a year earlier to more than 1 million units.
Acer's shipments fell 22 per cent in the fourth quarter to 710000 units, ranking second.
Other companies in the top five remained unchanged from the third quarter of 2022, with Lenovo ranking third with 550000 units shipped, down 27%.
Dell and Asustek ranked fourth and fifth, down 25% and 37%, respectively.
Overall, in the PC market (including desktops, laptops, and tablets) in the fourth quarter of 2022:
Apple ranked first with 25.5 million units shipped, up 5% from a year earlier, and its market share expanded to 24%.
Lenovo came in second, giving way to Apple since the same period last year, with shipments of 17.9 million units, down 32 per cent from a year earlier.
Hewlett-Packard and Dell ranked third and fourth with shipments of 13.2 million and 10.9 million, respectively.
Supported by tablet growth, Samsung ranked fifth with a year-on-year increase of 6% and shipped 8.3 million units.
