Google hopes to use Chrome Blink engine on iOS to replace Apple's WebKit

Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, February 7 (Xinhua)-- Google has introduced a new experimental feature for Chrome to bypass Apple's restrictions on the WebKit engine on the iOS to use its own Blink engine.

As we all know, Apple requires that all web browsers in iOS must be based on using the same WebKit engine as Apple's Safari browser, whether it's Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or other third-party browsers.

Proponents of the open web have long argued that Apple's restrictions stifle competition between web browsers on iPhone and iPad, as well as possible innovation.

CTOnews.com found that the Google development team announced on Chromium Bug Tracker last week that they had begun efforts to port the full Blink engine of Chrome / Chromium to iOS, a project that could change the status quo of iOS browsers, or at least lay the foundation for changes in iOS one day.

Of course, the Chromium team now knows very well that this is not a "releasable product". After all, any browser that doesn't use WebKit violates App Store's policy. As a result, their current plan is to migrate a scaled-down version of the "content_shell" app rather than anything similar to a full Chrome browser.

According to reports, the Chromium team will use this "basic browser" to test the performance of Blink and other necessary browser components on iOS.

A Google spokesman said in a statement to The Register:

This is an experimental project prototype, and we are developing part of an open source project to understand some aspects of performance on iOS. Users are currently unavailable and we will continue to abide by Apple's policy.

The Chromium team plans to provide guidance to interested developers to build their own Blink engine and content_shell for trial on iPhone and iPad development machines.

It is worth noting that Google's Chromium team has made every effort to port Blink to iOS and has introduced dozens of related code changes in the past week. With optimism, we may see this Chrome browser for the first time in the next few weeks, as well as Microsoft Edge, Opera and other App running on iOS.
