Samsung responds to "sacrificing mature process orders for 3nm": inconsistent with facts, will continue to expand mature process applications

CTOnews.com February 6, Samsung reportedly faces difficulties in manufacturing chips based on the 3nm process. Not because of technological setbacks, but because of a shortage of talent in semiconductors. Samsung foundry does not appear to have enough R & D manpower to sustain 3 nm-based chip manufacturing, and reports suggest that Samsung has made some restructuring to alleviate these problems.

Samsung has reassigned some of its fab employees from traditional processes to 3nm processes (or lower), according to media reports on South Korea's Naver. The company doesn't seem to have enough talent to support all nodes, so industry observers say Samsung has reallocated manpower for the 130nm and 65nm foundry processes.

However, this restructuring is not without cost. Recent reports say Samsung is no longer accepting orders for chips based on 130nm and 65nm nodes from small and medium-sized fabless, which specializes in semiconductor design.

In terms of competition in semiconductors, the good news for Samsung is that it isn't the only chipmaker facing these problems. Semiconductor companies in the United States, Taiwan and the mainland of China are also struggling to hire more employees.

TSMC recently delayed production of 3nm chips, probably for the same reason. Samsung did ship its first 3nm chips last year, but the first shipments were small.

CTOnews.com understands that the new Samsung Galaxy S23 series phones use 4 nm-based chips, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and these chips are manufactured by TSMC.
