CTOnews.com, February 6 (Xinhua) according to Omdia's preliminary smartphone shipments report in the last quarter of 2022, global smartphone shipments totaled 3.015 billion units in the fourth quarter of 2022, down 15.4 percent from the previous year. Typically, this quarter has the most shipments. however, the trend has changed this year, down 0.7% from the previous quarter. In fact, most of the major manufacturers experienced significant year-on-year negative growth in the quarter, with shipments falling by double digits.

Traditionally, new iPhone phones are released in the third quarter of each year, and the fourth quarter is the peak of Apple's traditional shipments. Apple shipped 74 million units in the fourth quarter of 2022. Although shipments increased by 41.6% over the previous quarter, they fell 13.3% from a year earlier. Despite the sharp year-on-year decline, Apple retained its tradition of being number one in shipments in the fourth quarter. Since most brands experienced similar or larger year-on-year declines in the fourth quarter, Apple's global market share rose from 24 per cent last year to 25 per cent this year in terms of market share. In spite of this, Apple has been affected somewhat, and in the fourth quarter of this year, it broke the record for eight consecutive quarters of year-on-year growth.

"early demand and customer feedback for the latest iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are still very strong, thanks to a new front display called the Dynamic Island," Omdia analysts said. Apple is confident about strong demand and has plans to maximize production of both models to meet market demand. However, this situation has been hampered by the shutdown at Foxconn's plant. "

Samsung, following the usual practice, fell from first to second. Although this is due not only to apple's fourth-quarter growth, but also to its own 15.4% year-on-year decline, with shipments of 58 million units in the fourth quarter, compared with 69 million in the same period last year. CTOnews.com learned that Samsung's quarterly shipments fell 8.8% from a month earlier to 64 million in the third quarter. However, as other brands have fallen sharply at the same time, their market share has remained stable.

Most Chinese manufacturers continued to decline in the last few quarters of 2022. In the fourth quarter, Xiaomi, vivo and OPPO ranked third to fifth, respectively, with shipments falling more than 25 per cent year-on-year. Xiaomi shipped 33 million units, still the world's third-largest smartphone maker by shipments, but down 18 per cent from 41 million in the previous quarter and 26.5 per cent from 45 million last year.

Although both brands fell year-on-year, OPPO and vivo alternated between fourth and fifth places. Vivo shipped about 24 million yuan in the fourth quarter, down slightly from 2500 million in the third quarter, but 25.8 percent lower than last year's 3200 million. OPPO fared slightly worse, falling 29% from 29 million in the third quarter to 23 million in the current quarter, down 29% from 3300 million last year.

The market performance of Sound Transsion and Glory Honor seems to be more resilient than other Chinese manufacturers, with a year-on-year decline less than that of other manufacturers. Transsion ranked sixth in shipments in the most recent quarter, with 17 million units, down only slightly from 18 million in the previous quarter and last year. Honor shipped a total of 14 million units in the fourth quarter. This is the same as the previous quarter, but down slightly from 15 million the previous year.

Realme ranked eighth with sales of 11 million units. This is down 16.9% from the previous quarter and 31.5% from the previous year-the biggest decline of any large brand. A decline is expected against the backdrop of a decline in China's domestic market, a changing business environment in India and turmoil in eastern Europe-all of which are key markets. In any case, it is surprising that realme has fallen faster and faster than its competitors focused on mid-and high-end prices, possibly because the brand experienced serious inventory problems in 2022.

Motorola ranked ninth with sales of 11 million units, unchanged from the previous quarter, but down 10.4 per cent from the previous quarter. It was the first decline in shipments in a year, and Huawei remained tenth, with shipments of 7.5 million units, down 12.7 per cent from the previous month. But as more products are released this year, it is up 59.6% from last year.

Global smartphone shipments fell 9.9 per cent year-on-year to 1.207 billion in 2022, compared with 1.34 billion last year. Glory Honor is the only major manufacturer to grow year-on-year, reaching 59 million units in 2022, compared with 40 million units in 2021. Apple and Motorola are the most resilient brands, down 1.3% and 1.4%, respectively. Samsung's final shipments in 2022 were 259 million, ranking first in the world, but down 4.8 per cent from 272 million in 2021. Those most affected are Chinese manufacturers, with shipments of Xiaomi, vivo and OPPO all falling by double digits compared with the same period last year.
