Introduction "Fire of love", which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2022, is the best human geography documentary I have seen in the past decade, and it is also the best interpretation of "Love plot". Rotten tomato 99% freshness, MTC83 score must see certification, Douban 8.8 points National Geographic documentary, International documentary Association Award for best photography and best screenwriter, shortlisted for the 2023 Academy Award for best documentary and other honors and recognition to bring human geography into the vision of more people, through the cloak of love stories to explore the relationship between man and nature. The narrator of "Volcano Love" said: "there is a fire in this world, and in the fire, a pair of lovers have found a home." Death is often full of regret and fear, but the volcanic lovers are duty-bound to yearn for the kingdom of heaven.
❖
First, soul mate-pursuing the romance of science in the 1960s, when continental drift theory and plate tectonics emerged, volcanology as a new subject attracted Maurice Krafft and Katja Krafft. They have different educational backgrounds and life experiences, but they fall in love with the volcano by coincidence. this enthusiasm for exploration is sublimated after they know each other and refine their romantic feelings-they are fervent suitors of the volcano and each other's soul mates. In the following 25 years, they actively devoted themselves to the study of volcanology, photographed, recorded and studied hundreds of active volcanoes with cameras, and witnessed the eruption of more than 100 volcanoes, leaving rich first-hand data for the study of volcanology.
Maurice Krafft and Katja Krafft not only leave rigorous data as scientists, but also record the mental process of human beings in the face of the geographical spectacle of volcanoes. Influenced by French neo-wave doctrine, Maurice Krafft and Katja Krafft also gradually began to add some thoughts and insights to the films recorded in science. The swaying scenes full of streams of consciousness in Volcano Love are the stories of memories, forgetfulness and recollection between the two people and the volcano.
❖
Second, the ultimate form of human geography-"Love plot" and "Volcano Love" this documentary fully expresses the "love plot" from the perspective of "individual" in the camera language full of philosophy and romance. The famous geographer Duan Yifu's masterpiece "Love for Earth complex" (Topophilia) elaborates on it. He integrates geography, phenomenology, semiotics, physiology, history and other disciplines. As soon as this book is published, it has become a bibliography of many geography departments. However, "Love plot" is not a concept since the birth of humanities and geography, but has gone through a long process of selection, development and re-selection.
The Department of Geography of the University of Washington in the United States initiated the application of mathematical models to the study of human geography, and then gradually formed the school of econometric geography [1, 2]. It is during this period that human geography and physical geography embarked on a completely different path of development, with the former emphasizing generalization and induction while the latter attaching importance to experimental analysis. Although they still coexist in geography departments in universities, their nature has become more and more polarized [3,4]. At this stage, most of the human geography is the geography of human factors, and the depth of its research has not caught up with the development of physical geography.
In the 1970s and 1990s, human geography made great progress, gradually established its own discipline system, and gradually become a mature discipline with unique methodology and fixed research field [4,5]. But during this period, human geography often focuses on "economic people" or mechanical population, rather than "individuals" full of personality. At the beginning of the new century, many humanities began to pay attention to individuals and individuals, and geography gradually began to pay attention to personalized and moral humanities research. Human beings often overindulge in life, but ignore inanimate things. Now human geography is also arousing human love for inanimate things, and begins to re-examine the relationship between man and the earth based on the perspective of ethnic groups and centered on the perspective of individuals.
❖
Third, understanding and loving the world is as important as transforming the world. as a discipline, like many other disciplines, it is challenged by the growing "value of existence", which makes many human geographers actively devote themselves to applied research and urgently prove the "usefulness" of human geography. Such as spatial analysis, urban and regional planning, housing policy and real estate planning, business and market analysis, tourism planning, environmental impact assessment, etc. But should human geography still allow for the existence of more individuality but "useless"? The answer is yes. First of all, as members of nature, the relationship between id and greater id has not been answered clearly, and secondly, we can't ignore our feelings for inanimate things in our DNA. We will be sad to see the torrential rain, happy to see the sun shining, the feeling that "one day I will climb to the top of you" when we see the mountains, and the loneliness of "the lonely smoke in the desert" when we see the desert.
How should we deal with ourselves in the middle of the earth? What kind of feelings should we have for mountains, rivers, sun, moon and stars? Without thinking about the emotions brought to us by inanimate things, Morris and Katia Craft in Volcano Love would not have a passion and spirit of exploration beyond that of their contemporaries in volcanology, let alone love each other to make a story.
