CTOnews.com, February 6, 2008. Recently, Microsoft announced that Ms. Melanie Nakagawa officially joined Microsoft in January 2023 as Microsoft's global vice president and new chief sustainability officer. She will work with a number of Microsoft teams to play a leading role in environmental sustainability.

▲ Melanie Nakagawa, according to Microsoft, Melanie will bring Microsoft nearly 20 years of experience in environmental sustainable development, across policy, business, technology and other fields, which is very important for Microsoft to continue to promote and explore the journey of sustainable development.

She previously worked as director of climate strategy at a private equity firm focused on climate technology, working with growth companies in North America, Europe and Asia. She also has experience dealing with environmental and energy policy and regulatory issues in non-profit organizations and academic sectors.

Microsoft said Melanie joined Microsoft at a critical moment. January 2023 marks the third anniversary of Microsoft's goal of "achieving negative carbon emissions by 2030 and eliminating carbon discharged into the atmosphere since the company's inception by 2050". Microsoft is very satisfied with the progress made so far and announced that it must speed up the progress and continue to expand the scope of climate-related work.

CTOnews.com learned that Melanie will lead Microsoft to three missions:

First, continue to achieve the 2030 goal: negative carbon emissions, positive benefits of water resources, zero waste and contribution to global biodiversity. Melanie leads a team of world-renowned environmental scientists who will help ensure that Microsoft's work takes full advantage of the best current scientific solutions. At the same time, the Environmental Sustainability Operations team will work with Microsoft's internal financial and business teams, as well as sustainability experts, to achieve the company's internal operational goals.

And all this work will be based on actions large and small. These include building a new heat center for Microsoft Redmond Park, building Silicon Valley Park and applying for zero water consumption certification (all non-potable water in the park comes from Rain Water or recycled water) certification, opening the 4th and 5th recycling centers in Singapore and Chicago respectively to promote zero waste operation goals, investing in global data centers to enable them to make better use of renewable energy, And the investment that makes Microsoft an important global buyer of carbon offsets.

Second, Microsoft will accelerate innovation and create advanced technology to help customers and partners achieve sustainable development goals. Melanie will work with the leadership of Microsoft and learn from each other.

Finally, Microsoft will work with the government, NGO and business organizations to promote progress on major global sustainable development issues. Melanie and her team will play an important leadership role in the following initiatives:

Promote the application of climate-related data and develop more powerful artificial intelligence

Promote the research and formulation of new laws, policies and regulations in the areas of climate, energy and sustainability

Support for reliable, interoperable and globally unified carbon emissions measurement, recording and reporting systems

Provide support for the development of talents and skills related to sustainable development, including both job roles that focus on sustainable development and existing positions that require sustainable development experience and skills with the development of the times.
